Because we don't get enough of baseball on our own, we decided that we should spend extra time down in Des Moines at Principal Park watching some of the State Tournament. Thursday night, we watched the Coon Rapids Crusaders and Martinsdale-St Mary in the 1A Semi-Finals. Keith is a graduate of CR-B, and played baseball while he was in high school. Keith's Dad now drives the school bus for the baseball team. We watched this game with Papa.
It was a close game, and CR-B had it in the bag until the last inning. It was a very disappointing end to the evening, but it was such a fun game to watch with Papa.

A Few More of Jared
Just trying to be a big kid....
Trevor hangs out with his big brothers so much, that some times he forgets that he really isn't a big kid!! He walked with Cale and a couple of his friends back to the bus after a game in Ogden. I think that if the coach told him he could ride the bus with the team, he would've!
Once the A game was over, Trevor sat outside of the dugout for the B game and helped to run the score board. It was all wireless, so he thought he was big stuff sitting there with the remote!

Both Cale and Jared have a great group of friends, and they are all so good to Trevor. They play with him and never complain that he's around. It would be so easy for them to ignore him, but they always include him. My little guy is growing up WAY too fast!! While he thinks he's a big kid, I'm doing my best to keep him little. It's not really working.....

We didn't see this one coming.....
Brace yourself....this has the potential to be a long post......I know that I already told you about Cale's Little League season. After that was over, he began playing for Gilbert Middle School's 7th. Grade team. His coach was Trent Becker, who is an amazing coach and role model for these kids. After one game, Cale told me that he was so thankful that Mr. Becker was his coach because he could hear the coach for the other team yelling at the other team while he was playing 3rd. base. He told me that Mr. Becker never yelled at them, and just told them not to worry about errors, we'd do better the next time. What a great experience for these 13 year olds!!
Before I can get too far into his season this year, first I have to take you back to 3rd and 4th. grade. Cale went through those 2 seasons without one single hit. In 3rd. grade he had some sort of a bulls eye on him because he was always getting hit by a pitch...some times more then once a game!! In 4th. grade I remember that I had to search the house for him when it was time for practice. I often found him under the bed hiding because he did NOT want to go to practice. After practice, I could hear him from downstairs crying in the shower. Partially, because his Dad could be a little hard on him, and partially because he wasn't having any fun. How fun is it when you aren't having ANY success?! It was in 4th. grade that I decided that I wasn't making him play any more. It was suppose to be fun, and he was miserable. Baseball isn't for everyone and that's OK. The next year he went to a mini camp over the winter, but still didn't want to play in 5th. grade. I stuck to my word and told him that was fine. Well, one night in the car, shortly before registration was due, he told me that he would give baseball one more shot. I was happy. His dad was thrilled! He had a few hits here and there during 5th. grade and some good defensive plays. He played again in 6th. grade, and did a little better then the year before. He was hooked on baseball at this point!! Keith has spent a lot of time with him in the batting cage over the last few years and it really was starting to pay off. We have told him over and over that somethings (it could be sports, it could be Math or English) come easier to some people then it does for others. Everyone can succeed, but some have to work harder, and he was going to be one of those who was going to have to work for it but that was OK...he would deserve everything good that came his way. Over this past winter, he spent 2 months with an indoor hitting league and got into the batting cage in February, and got to work on some pitching. I had other Dads tell me how hard he had worked and how when it clicked, he was going to be good. I was so proud of his efforts!
He started playing 7th. grade baseball...along with 23 other kids!! What do you do with 24 kids when only 9 can play at a time?? Mr. Becker did the best he could...most times they played it was a double header so there was an A and a B game. If there was only 1 game, Mr. Becker divided all the kids equally, and there was a red squad and a black squad. As I said, athletics isn't a natural thing for Cale, so I'm use to playing the B game. I wasn't prepared for the first game when I sat in the bleachers and found out that my son was going to be the starting pitcher for the B game! This game (and most of their games) were during the day, so Keith was working and couldn't come. I was busy texting him about how well he did....they won 12- 3 and he had a double and a single!
He played some on 1st. base, too.

He played some on 1st. base, too.
He just hangs on every word from Coach Becker and Coach Maffit.
As the season went on, he played less in the B games and more in the A games. On this given night, he had played the entire A game at 3rd and sat with some of his friend keeping the books. He was over the moon with enthusiasm! I was over the moon for him!!
Then came the day that it was a little chilly and over cast. I was going to drive out to Casey's to get some cappuccino before the game. I have to drive by the baseball diamond and I saw that the game was starting. I scanned over the outfield for Cale. I could spot him by how high he wore his pant legs! He wasn't at his usual spots at 3rd or left field....then I found him! He was the starting pitcher for the A GAME!! I didn't see that one coming!! I turned around in the nearest driveway and went straight to the game! Casey's would have to wait!
He ended the season undefeated with a 5-0 record while he was pitching!
He ended the season with a .480 batting average. (For the record..major leaguers aim for a batting average over .300!!)
He loved playing 3rd. base! He loved the "hot corner"! He has a really strong arm and can throw it to first with good accuracy and get the out every time!
Uncle Kevin had to come to the last game to see what his nephew was up to this year! He was impressed with his improved abilities, too! By the time the season was only a quarter over, he was playing all of the A games, and just periodically in the B games.
Cale, I wasn't sure that we would see a season like this after your experiences in 3rd and 4th grade. I am so proud of how you stuck with it, and worked your tail off! You deserve all of the comments that other coaches and parents have had. A Dad of one of your teammates told me that the highlight of his baseball season was watching YOU have the success that you had. I was also told about a coaching newsletter that was sent out to other coaches in Gilbert that talked about you. It didn't mention you by name, but it talked about how you stuck with it, when others would have given up. I couldn't be happier for you, or more proud of you this year. It was a thrill for me to sit and watch you have the success that you deserve!! Love you!! Mom
Keith and I spent many late nights laying in bed talking about Cale and baseball this year. It always came back to "who would've thought...." And "I sure didn't see this coming!" He has become our poster child for never giving up, and how you just never know which kid is going to bloom early, or later then the others. We are so thrilled for him! Next year seems so far away!!

Thought for the Day
Trevor informed me today:
"Mom, everyone has farted....even the Queen of England."
I Love That Boy!

Good-Bye
Yesterday morning, we said good-bye to my Aunt Jan. She was married to my dad's brother, Frank. Last Thursday morning she was riding in the back seat of a car driven by Frank, and her brother was riding in the front seat. They met a car on a 2 lane highway that swerved into their lane and hit them head on. She and the other driver were killed.
My Uncle Frank spent 4 days in the hospital and was released just in time to come to the funeral home. He is pretty sore and stiff, with bruises, cuts and stitches on his lip and his hand. I just hurt for him when I saw him. I could see through his physical pain and see how much his heart was hurting. He had such sadness in his eyes.
Jan's sister gave my Dad a sealed envelope that contained pictures of the cars. They told him that if he wanted to show it to Frank he could, it was up to him. Dad decided that he would give it plenty of time before he brought it up, but Dad did look at the pictures Monday when him and Mom were in their hotel room. I asked him about it at the funeral and his lip quivered a little and I could tell his eyes welled up a bit, and he just shook his head. The only word he could utter came out as a whisper...."lucky." I had already overheard someone say that it was the air bag that saved Frank's life and her brother's life and I mentioned that to Dad. He nodded and told me that those 2 men were lucky to be alive--he had no idea how anyone survived that crash.
Frank and Jan have 1 son, and he has been a strong, strong pillar through all of this. Him and his wife, Karen, planned everything and picked everything out and then would drive to the hospital to go over it with his Dad. They spent those days driving back and forth making all sorts of decisions.
Jan would've been so proud of her son and how he has come through this. Frank walked by me at the church today and whispered in an almost inaudible voice "It's a bad day." All I could do was nod. It has been several bad days. I just can't get his sad eyes out of my head.

Trevor's Baseball Season
Remember how I said that Cale loves baseball? Trevor is right up there with him. Trevor's problem is that he is around the big kids so much that he is a little put out by his team mates that just don't "get it." He doesn't like that his league doesn't keep track of balls and strikes, he doesn't like that there are actually no outs and that everyone bats and everyone gets to score. He is just a little too serious about this for a 1st grader.
Teri came to one of his game and got these great pictures. She really captured his game face! Please excuse the number of pictures I have included in this post....I just couldn't decide what to leave out!!
He was checking all of his fans that were sitting behind him. He didn't spend too much time on us...he had a game to play!

He's eyeing home plate.....
In the dugout. Keith coached his team this year and you can see him adjusting someone's helmet on the right side of this picture.
He's got a pretty good arm and good accuracy for a 7 year old....if I do say so myself! (I can say that....I'm his mother!!)
Catcher! I'm not sure if he likes it back there, or not. Keith was a catcher, so I think that he liked to have him back there!
Did I mention that this kid LOVES baseball???
His season was really short...only 5 games and one of them got rained out this year. He could spend every waking moment at the ball fields and that wouldn't be enough. We are so fortunate that we are walking distance to the Gilbert fields so the boys do spend a lot of time over there. Even when the other kids have practice Trevor likes to go over and just mess around on one of the fields. He has imaginary games all by himself and it is the cutest thing I have ever seen!
Did I mention that this kids REALLY loves baseball??!!

Cale, Little League and my need for a new camera
Cale loves baseball. That's all there is to it. In Gilbert, there is a 7th. grade team that starts play around the time that school gets out. Little League also offered him an opportunity to play during the spring. It was a shortened season and they treated it as sort of a "spring training" for the boys to get prepared for the regular season. He jumped on the chance to start playing games early. (He had already started some drills during an indoor hitting league that started the first of February and met 3 times a week.) This kid was ready to go! My sister-in-law, Teri has a really nice camera compared to my bitty, baby camera. Her son (our nephew) was also playing Little League so I was thankful when the 2 teams played each other so she could get some good shots of Cale, too.
I have one of those really nice cameras on my wish list for fall. All 3 boys have intentions of playing some football this fall and my bitty, baby camera just isn't going to cut it!
As much as I loved all of the pictures that she took, this last one is my favorite. First of all, I'm a huge fan of photos from the back, and that is Cale walking to the plate. What makes it even better is the catcher. The catcher is his cousin, Garret. Cale and Garret were born just 19 days apart, (and Cale makes sure you know that HE is older!) they don't live very far apart and it just so happens that their lockers are side by side at school. I love this shot. In fact I have cropped it, enlarged it and framed it for our family room in the basement.

Flash Back--Franklin Couty Fair and a Trip to the Cemetery
2 years ago today, I took the boys up to Hampton to the Franklin County Fair. I have SO many memories of the fair from when I was little. My brothers and I would always go spend a good deal of time with my Aunt and Uncle during the fair. My cousins always had some livestock to show, and us city slickers would become farm kids for a few days. Those were some great times!!
We met my parents and my brother, Kevin in Latimer, first. Our first stop was the cemetery next to St. Paul's Lutheran Church. This was my Dad's church growing up and there is a good chance that we are related to the majority of people that still go to church there....not to mention those in the cemetery! Jared loves going to the cemetery with Keith's Mom and hearing all the stories about people who have died....he needs to know the how's and the why's! This was his first visit to this particular cemetery and he hung pretty close to my Dad because he knew most of the people there. We delivered flowers to my Grandparents and my Aunt. (The one that I had spent so much time with as a child.) We also put flowers on the grave of my Great-Grandpa. That is where Cale's interest peaked.
Here is Cale with the flowers that he brought for his Great-Great Grandpa Pralle. AUGUST Pralle. You see, Cale's full name is Cale AUGUST Jensen. He is always talking about his name sake even though he died years and years before Cale was born. In 1969 to be exact. At the age of 98.
This is a picture of Cale AUGUST with my brother, Kevin AUGUST, and my Dad, Marvin AUGUST. They were all named after my Dad's Grandpa. The other part of this story is that Cale was actually born on Kevin's birthday.....AUGUST 28! I remember growing up and everyone always thought that Kevin was named after the month in which he was born. I always thought that was strange, and then look.....I did the same thing to Cale!!

After we had all learned what we could at the cemetery, we went for lunch at the Latimer Golf Course where we met several of my aunts and uncles. Then it was off to the fair. The kids had a great time! They always ask about going back, but unfortunately they always have basketball camp during the fair. I'm still holding out hope to take them back some day.
There seemed to be some attractions with this coffin. Obviously, after going to the cemetery death doesn't necessarily bother me, but I just didn't see a real need to see my kids propped up in a coffin!!
We visited an old school house that has been placed on the fair grounds and restored. Inside was this map of the county and where all of the old country schools were. In the middle you can see the one marked "Honold." Well, Honold happens to be my maiden name. The Honold School was the particular school where my Dad, his siblings and his cousins went to school. It is also near where my Dad was raised.
And then there was Trevor. He loved the animals. Wasn't found of their smell, however, and thought that the goats were loud!

Because "Every Child Deserves the Chance to Play Baseball"
Last Saturday, Cale's 7th. grade baseball coach asked for volunteers to come to Des Moines with him to volunteer at the Miracle League. It is a baseball league for kids with disabilities. They ask for volunteers to come and help the kids field, bat and run the bases. Each one of their athletes is paired up with one or two "buddies" or "Angels in the Outfield." Cale is always eager to go any where that Coach Becker asks him to, and was more then ready when Saturday arrived! Originally, I was needed to drive and I wasn't disappointed by that because I wanted to see what it was all about and take some pictures. When I got there, they had enough drivers but I ended up driving down by myself so I could check it out! And I'm glad I did!! It was a really neat thing to experience!
This is Cale and his friend, Ryan. During this particular game (the kids volunteered for 4- 1 hour games) their buddy was this girl named, Kelsey. And let me tell you....she could really zoom around those bases in her chair! Those boys had trouble keeping up!

As you can see, I had trouble narrowing down which pictures to include. Thank goodness for collages!!
The man in the upper left hand picture is Coach Trent Becker. I cannot begin to say enough good things about this man! He is so good with ALL kids...not just his team, or the athletes on Saturday....ALL kids!! I feel like Cale was truly blessed to be able to have him for a coach, and we wish he would coach Cale every year.
In this particular picture, he was trying his best to charm this little guy. His mother said he was in some sort of funk that day, and I told her that Coach Becker was just fabulous, so not to worry. Just a few minutes later, this little boy threw his arm around Trent and sat right on his knee. It was really neat to see! When Trent saw this picture he told me that they were discussing whether or not to to intentionally walk the next batter. (I'm also thinking that Cale's friend, Ty, was trying to get the wave started in the back!)
At the end of each game, both teams meet at the pitcher's mound and throw their hands in and yell: "1, 2, 3....MIRACLE LEAGUE!"
Each one of our Gilbert kids did a great job with their buddies! I couldn't have been more proud of them in how they handles themselves and the impression they left. They had to get up early and give up a good chunk of their Saturday to do this and not one of them complained about being tired, or hot. They laughed and smiled all morning. Several parents and coaches told Mr. Becker that the Gilbert kids were really good with the kids and very mature. I'm not really surprised, though...I knew all of those kids were good kids and WANTED to be there. Cale talked about his experience all weekend, and is ready to go again and from what I have heard from other Moms...so are their kids. Coach Becker would like to make this a yearly event for these kids...if not more often. He thought this was more fun then he should be allowed to have!
VERY COOL GUYS....KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!
(And thanks, Mr. Becker for providing the kids with this opportunity...it's something they will never forget!)
