Trevor=Charming

I know I always say how charming Trevor is, but it really is true. For instance...

Last Friday night, I was trying on a new shirt that, well...how do I say this nicely...showed more of my muffin top then I was comfortable with. I sighed and said "Oh, I just wish I was thin." Trevor looks at me and says "But, Mom! You are thin! You mean you wish you were thinner!" :)

Later in the same night we were flipping through channels on the TV when we ran across the movie Pretty Woman. I love that move, so stopped and watched a little which brought about this conversation:

Jared: What's this movie called?
Me: Pretty Woman
Jared: What's it about?
Me: A pretty woman
Jared: What's her name?
Trevor: Heidi
Me: (:

That Trevor...he sure knows which side his bread is buttered on! Nice charm skills T!

Ball Shagger

Our 3 boys belong to the Little Cyclone Club at Iowa State. It really is a great deal...for $50 the kids get a T-shirt and free admission to ALL of the ISU sporting events except conference men's basketball games. We really get our money out of it! There are other perks to the Club-one of them is that Cale has gotten to be a ball shagger for 3 Women's basketball games in the last 2 years. We were told that they offer this chance to kids in 6-8 grades. We got a letter and we were suppose to pick 3 games that he would be available for. Since we live close, we usually pick mid-week game hoping that those that live far away won't want to do those games--increasing our chances. Part of his responsibilities are sweeping the floor during time-outs, getting the referees drinks as they need them, and standing under the basket while the teams are warming up before the game and before the second half. Their job then is to retrieve any balls that should get away, and throw them back to the players. I asked him once how he knew where to throw them to, and he said that you just look to see who is looking at you.

This game was against Texas and was shown on ESPN2. If you are wondering, it was a "white out" game...that explains all of the white shirts you see! Before this game, some of the players, and an assistant coach, came up to him and introduced themselves and asked him his name and where he went to school. He didn't have any question about where to throw the ball this time because they would yell his name for the ball. He said how kind Kelsey Bolte and Lauren Mansfield were. Lauren happens to be Cale's favorite player and Cale told me that when she was talking to him his heart was beating so fast he could hardly breathe!! Love it! :)

One of the perks is that when the teams are in the locker rooms, the Ball Shaggers get to shoot baskets. I think (I hope!) that Cale realizes how luck he is to be able to shoot baskets on the floor of Hilton Coliseum! It certainly wasn't anything that his Dad and I were able to do when we were his age! And poor Jared...he just watches his brother shooting out there and is practically drooling! It is a dream of his to be able to shoot out there. It's just killing him! I just hope that some day they choose him to do it.

I Love My School District!

It seems like I'm always saying "And THIS is why I love our school district!" The kids each have about 100ish kids in their class, give or take-which I think is a great size! The teachers are all wonderful, fun, young, energetic and interactive with both the kids and parents. For example, there is a standing joke between Cale's 7th. grade Social Studies teacher and I about her and I doing a routine to a Joan Jett and the Blackhearts song for the end of the year talent show. Just the thought of it drives Cale crazy!

I had an email conversation this week with his Language Arts teacher that is worth repeating:

It started on Wednesday when I was taking Cale to confirmation and we were stopped at a red light, and he made a comment about the next light had already turned green.....

Cale: That light is already green. If we were up there, we could've got gone sooner.
Me: Got gone sooner?!?!
Cale: (laughing) Yeah, I don't really care about grammar.
Me: *gasp* what would Mrs. Herber say?
Cale: I don't know. I dare you to tell her!

Well, I have a hard time letting a dare from a 13 year old go. So, I emailed her that night, but didn't tell Cale that I had. Thursday morning, I got the following email from Mrs. Herber:

Oh, my goodness! Cale, Cale, Cale.

So, I've had the night to think about this, and I've decided to add two SPECIAL questions to Cale's quiz today:

27)Please write the following sentence correctly: "We could've got gone sooner."
28)Why should a person care about grammar? Please use correct grammar answering the question.

He came home from school and I asked him about his LA quiz that day and he said it was fine and then said "Ohhhhh.......you should know!" He said he didn't catch on right away, and thought that the "got gone sooner" question was just a coincidence. When he turned his paper in, he asked if the last 2 questions were extra credit and Mrs. Herber just laughed. He was even surprised to hear that HE was the only one to get the extra questions.

Thanks for playing along, Mrs. Herber! I LOVE my school district!

Job Shadow

On Wednesday, 8th. grade students in Gilbert did some job shadowing for the day. It gave them an idea of what career they may be interested in so they could choose their high school classes with that in mind. Cale is only a 7th. grader, but we talked about it any way. Jared asked me "Sooo..if I wanted to be an accountant, I could go to work with Dad all day?" I told him, yes, but I wouldn't recommend hanging out with his Dad...it's not very exciting. Trevor then asked me "Sooo...if I want to be a football player, do I just keep on doing what I'm doing?" I wasn't quite sure how to answer that! I finally told him that he might want to have a career to fall back on--just in case he got injured, or something.

I'm just wondering how many kids said they wanted to be a coach and wanted to head on over to Iowa Sate and hang out with Fred Hoiberg, Paul Rhoads or Bill Fennelly??

Flash Back Friday

These pictures were taken on this day in 2005. Keith and I had gone to San Diego as guests of the Chemical Division at United Suppliers. We didn't have any set agenda so this day we set out with Dave and Joan Mulder and Renee and Dave Hoyt and we went to Tijuana, Mexico. We took a train down to the border, walked across the border, and then took the "Blue Bus" to some area shops. We had the blue bus line and the red bus line to choose from. The blue bus line was new in the business and they were a little cheaper. After a little driving, we were stuck in traffic and we suddenly heard a loud BANG. To be honest, it sounded a little like a gun shot. I looked over and both of the other couples were laying on the floor of the bus....the Daves laying on top of the wives to protect them. Like Knights in Shining Armour! But not Keith and I! We were both sitting up looking out the window trying to figure out what was going on. As it turns out someone had thrown a rock through the windshield! As Mr. Blue Bus driver explained it, it was the Red Bus line trying to deter this new business coming into the area. Apparently, that is how you handle business competition in Tijuana!

After they dropped us off and told us where they would pick us up again, we walked through some shops and had some drinks. After the excitement of getting there, we all seemed ready to make our visit quick and get back into the United States.

We went back to where we were told to meet the bus and we waited. And waited. And waited. The blue bus never showed up. We decided that the red bus people had scared the blue bus people away.

We eventually headed over to the red bus station and caught a ride back to the border so we could walk back across and get back on the train. What an adventure!! It didn't take long for the story to get around to the other United Suppliers people. Hands down...we had the best story of the day!

We were shocked as we were getting on the red bus when Keith ran into 2 guys that he had graduated from high school with. Really....what are the odds that you run into people from little ol' Coon Rapids, Iowa while you are in Tijuana!?

(Renee...this is obviously before you started carrying your camera every where! Otherwise you would've had more pictures to document our time in San Diego and Mexico! I didn't even touch on our foot tour in the POURING rain to get to a sea food restaurant on a Friday during Lent!)
