Easter

We went to church at our church in Ames on Easter and then headed to Coon Rapids for dinner with Keith's family. I wanted a quick family picture which was nearly impossible thanks to a certain 13 year old! You can tell by this picture that he was not really so thrilled about the idea and was doing his best to distance himself from the rest of the family! Nice try, but this Mama was determined to get a picture!

My boys are getting too big for the Easter egg hunts and all of that. As soon as they got their clothes changed, and we finished eating they had grabbed their bat bags and were headed down the hill to the high school baseball field. My 3 boys had a great time there with Keith, their Uncle Kurt, Papa and their cousin Garret. I think my boys would be happiest if they could just pitch a tent at any baseball field and just live there!

One thing that was still the same was Grandma's bunny cake. The boys look for it whenever we are there for Easter.

Cy's House of Trivia

Last weekend we participated in Cy's House of Trivia with a group of our friends. It is held at Hilton Coliseum and is a fundraiser for the ISU Athletic Department. The first order of business was to come up with a clever name. I think we did OK in that department....

This is our group of easily Cydtracked friends. We had a great time and did a lot of laughing throughout the evening.

Aaron and Lisa Clayberg.....(We knew that nobody would have more fun then Aaron, but we had no idea that he was our ace in the hole! He was just a wealth of useless knowledge!!)

Logan and Brianne Anderson (Although a late addition to our team, they were a great asset! Since Brianne is a librarian, we thought she should have all of the answers....but she informed us that librarians don't have all of the answers....they just know where to find them!)

Andrew Ricklefs and Carrie Thielen (Soon to be Mr. and Mrs. Ricklefs!! Are they just the cutest couple ever?! They are newly engaged and we are so happy for both of them as well as their kids! That's one lucky and happy bunch!)

Heidi and Keith Jensen (OK, that's us and you know that!)

And our hosts and emcees for the evening were Keith Murphy and Andy Fales. You may or may not recognize them from the Channel 13 Sports. Let me just tell you--they are just as entertaining in person as they are on TV. They are great at this gig!

A little background about Cy's House of Trivia....there were 88 tables of Cyclone fans eating and drinking their way through the night. There are 8 rounds of questions with 10 questions in each round. Each round has a different topic...some of this years topics were "Big 80s", "One Hit Wonders" (parts of songs and we had to list the artist), and "Corporate Logos".

For most rounds you are given an "expert" or "celebrity" at your table to help you with your answers. Some of our experts were: Jamie Pollard (ISU Athletic Director)

ISU Women's Basketball Player Kelsey Bolte, who had just been drafted the week before by the Atlanta Dream of the WNBA.

And Shane Burnham--Iowa State's Defensive Tackles Coach. He didn't get to our table until one of the last rounds, and let's just say that he had made the most of the evening! :)

And although this guy never sat at our table, Carrie and I had been staking the situation out so we could get our picture with him! I'm not sure he needs an introduction, but it is the ISU Head Men's basketball coach: Fred Hoiberg, or you can just call him "The Mayor"! And let me just tell you that he's just as cute and polite in person, as he seems on TV. He was like royalty around there and every where he turned someone wanted a picture. He didn't turn anyone down, and HE always said thank-you. A true (adorable!!) gentleman!

Our goal for the evening was to NOT come in last place...and we didn't!! There were 88 tables and we came in 66nd place! I'm pretty certain that some how anyone in the top 10 must have cheated!!

I think that it's safe to say that we all had a GREAT time and are looking forward to doing it all over again next year! ( A year really does seem like a long time to wait!)

Good Friday

This morning I was getting Trevor up for school and I told him that today was Good Friday. He looked at me and asked:

"Is this the day that Jesus went to Yosemite?"

I knew that he ment "Gethsemane", but I have chuckled about that ALL day....he just made my day!!

Oh, Goodness!

Tonight I fixed a new recipe of potatoes and ham in the crock pot. Cale had his band concert tonight, so we were trying to eat in a hurry. Nothing fancy. We just had the potatoes and ham, green beans and some bananas. Jared dug right in. He is the best eater out of all of the boys. He will eat almost anything, and always asks if he can try something new when we are out to eat. He finished his plate except for about 3 bites. He looked at me and said: "Can I be done? I'm not saying it's bad. It's actually quite good. I just can't handle any more goodness." How could I argue with that? He then moved onto some banana bread.....

Aunt Betty

16 years ago today, my Aunt Betty died. She was my Mom's only sister. Mom had brothers, but this was her only sister. She was 6 years younger then my Mom, and her daughter, Kari, is 6 years younger then me. My Mom and I spent a lot of time with Betty and Kari when I was growing up, and Betty was like a second mother to me. Kari was adopted, and people used to comment about how Betty and I looked more alike then her and her own daughter. None of us would correct them. We would just look at each other and agree, enjoying our own little secret.

She died very suddenly of cardiac arrest in her sleep. She was only 54. She was a smoker, a pretty heavy smoker at that. She had gotten up that morning to make breakfast for Kari and my Uncle Neal, said she didn't feel well and went back to bed. Shortly thereafter, Kari heard her struggle and she was gone. She worked hard at keeping her family happy and taking care of them, so some said that she truly died "with her boots on."

I can tell you all about that Thursday back in 1995 when I got the call at work. It was Maundy Thursday...the Thursday before Easter. I can tell you what time my Mom called. I can tell you what I was wearing. I can tell you all about the conversation that I had with my Mom and Dad and then later with my co-workers. I can even tell you about how my Dad came to where my Mom works to tell her. My Dad NEVER came to visit her at work so she knew instantly there was something wrong when she saw him. I can even tell you how I cried every night for a month.

She was quite a character, who didn't shy away from, how should we say it,...a colorful language. VERY different from my Mom. My Mom will often SPELL mild swear words, where she would let the F-Bomb go once in awhile! It just made my Mom laugh. And it still does. I remember once she dropped a cigarette in her lap and everyone was jumping to get it and all my Mom said "Good Gravy, Girl!" Betty just laughed.

This picture was taken on December 22, 1990. It was the day I graduated from college. It was a VERY cold windy day. Well, every day at UNI seemed like a cold and windy day, but it really was! (Yes, I know that my hair was big...so was everyone else's. What is the saying?? "The higher the hair, the closer to God??") She rode up to Cedar Falls with my parents for commencement and she spent a great deal of the day telling everyone how cold it was, and how her feet were freezing the whole way up in the car.

I'm not sure what year this was, but it was Christmas at my Grandparents. I was showing off some new perfume, and Betty was holding up my Cabbage Patch Doll. If you look really close she is crossing the legs of the doll. I remember her saying that the doll had to pee, so we needed to hurry with the picture. Seriously.

I can't tell you how many times I was called Betty. My Mom would do it, and my Grandparents would do it. When she died, nobody called me Betty any more and I have to admit that I sort of missed it. I remember being around my Grandparents' friends and hear them whisper about how much I looked like her. About 3 months after she died, Keith and I got married and Uncle Neal went through the receiving line and hugged me and started to cry. He told me that I looked just like Betty did on their wedding day, 30 years earlier.

As you can tell, I still miss her very much. There are jokes we hear, or stories we want to share and we talk about how that would be something that Aunt Betty would've liked. I will always have a connection with her, but I added another connection with her on January 10, 2004. That would've been her 63rd. birthday. It was the day that Trevor was born. When I called my Mom at 6:30 in the morning and told her that she had a new grandson, she knew right away who's birthday he was born on. She was sort of hoping that he would come on that day.

She would've enjoyed all of my boys. I Miss and Love You, Aunt Betty!

Hi, my name is.....

We went out to eat Saturday night, and our waiter came to our table and said "Hi, my name is Jared, and I'll be your server tonight." Without missing a beat, my son looks at him and says "Hi, my name is Jared, and I'll be your customer tonight." I just have NO idea where he gets his quick wit!! ;)

Iowa's Gold Star Military Museum

We went to Johnston one day during Spring Break and toured the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum. My brother volunteers there, so we met him and my parents there for a tour.

My brother, Kevin, with Trevor... A couple of my Muscle Men holding up the end of a helicopter. One highlight was looking in the para scope. You could see a long way around the area of Johnston.

I love the concentration.......and Trevor's squished nose.....

The boys also got to climb into a tank that was sitting inside. My favorite part of the day was when Cale stuck his head up through the turret and hit his head on the gun....twice! So, when he went to peek his head through for the 3rd. time he announced that he knew what he was doing this time and moved the gun out of the way. However, in doing so, he beamed Jared upside the head with the other end! All I heard was Jared: "Ouch!" I couldn't quit laughing about that all day. They were like a couple of stooges!! Naturally, Trevor wanted to peek his head through, too. Even standing on the seat, he was a little too short, so my Dad went in and helped lift him up. Papa to the rescue!! Ummm... did I mention that my dad is REALLY claustrophobic??? What Papa won't do for the boys! Jared thinking he was going to drive that thing out of there! Yikes!

It was a pretty interesting day! Thanks for the tour Uncle Kevin!!

Like Father, Like Son(s)

I know that I posted these pictures last summer around Cale's birthday, but I wanted to show them again....Keith on the left, Cale on the right. I was thinking these 2 looked alike! Then......... I saw these 2 pictues.....Keith on the left, Jared on the right. Cale doesn't look so much like Keith any more, but as you can see....Jared sure does! I know that Jared was 3 in this photo, but I'm not sure how old Keith was. I don't think the apple fell very far from the tree! Jared has become his Daddy...inside AND out!

Flashback Friday

The boys with my Dad.
